April 6, 2024
On April 6, 2024, Therapicasso hosted an Open Mic and Poetry Writing event at the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library. Centered around the theme of self-discovery, the workshop guided participants in crafting pieces of poetry that reflected their personal experiences and identities, demonstrating how creative writing can serve as a powerful tool for emotional expression.
In comparison to their larger events, this was one of their smaller gatherings, but no less impactful. Its smaller scale served as a powerful reminder that meaningful change does not always require a large audience. The smaller group allowed for more time for one-on-one interaction, creating space for deeper connections between hosts and attendees.
The poetry exercise, based on “My Honest Poem” by Rudy Francisco, was created with the goal of evoking introspection. Amid life’s many distractions, it is easy to lose touch with how we are truly feeling. The activity was designed to give participants a space to slow down and focus inward. By thoughtfully choosing words to fill in each blank, participants had time to discover aspects of themselves that they hadn’t previously acknowledged. For some, the process sparked recognition of hobbies; for others, it was an opportunity to reflect on their identities apart from external expectations.
After writing their poems, participants were invited to share their finished poems in a supportive small group setting. These readings sparked heartfelt conversations that wouldn’t have emerged without the space cultivated in the room. To wrap up the lesson, the new poets were invited to take pictures at a photobooth.
This heartfelt event highlighted the power of creative expression. The blend of poetry and self-expression provided community members with an accessible outlet to explore their inner worlds in a safe, inspiring space. As Therapicasso continues to present meaningful mental health resources to their community, events like this stand as a testament to the power of creating together.
