April 24, 2024
With over 60 attendees, Therapicasso hosted their biggest event yet on April 24, 2025. Held at Monterey Park’s Hope Resiliency Center, Therapicasso organized an interactive activity centered around the psychological term “masking” with a creative, youth-oriented twist.
In psychology, masking refers to humans’ tendency to hide or alter their true identities to conform to societal norms. To help participants reflect on this concept, Therapicasso invited them to design double-sided tote bags: one side representing an individual’s external self–their mask–while the other showcased their inner, authentic identities. This simple painting activity offered participants a relaxing way to reflect on their true selves, who they are aside from external expectations.
Therapicasso’s team chose tote bags as the canvas not only because they are popular among youth, but also because they are practical and accessible. Every tote bag was able to function as a wearable expression of individuality–a subtle way for each person to show the world what makes them unique.
The workshop ran for several hours and quickly reached capacity. It was designed to be introspective and social, so attendees were encouraged to invite their friends and family to participate in the process together. Creative energy and laughter buzzed throughout the venue and was enhanced by a shared Polaroid camera. Candid moments were captured throughout the day, documenting the experience through the lens of the participants themselves.
This event proved that when youth are given the resources and space to reflect, they will show up and make a difference. For Therapicasso, this was a meaningful sign of growth which gave them confidence that passion and hard work pay off. With the help of strong partnerships, community engagement, and passion for change, Therapicasso continues to create spaces where individuals are not only encouraged to be themselves but also celebrated for it.
